I've had my Syrian boy, Helix, for 6 weeks. He's about 12 weeks old now, and weighed 71g when i got him. I weighed him the night before last and he's only 78g- compared to every other i've probably ever had, he is tiny! He's been shovelled full of food of all kinds, doesn't have a wheel, yet he's still so small. He came from a well known breeder (but i don't know anything about his breeding/lines etc- his parents may have just been small?) so even if he wasn't very big, i wouldn't expect him to be this small?

He's healthy, tame and lively, so i'm not worried, it's just odd! Is it possible he will have a growth spurt at some time, or would that have happened by now? Or is it not abnormal for them to be so small occasionally? Any ideas?

Well, I thought to myself ''I need to be practical and think about breeding and showing, to only take in a hamster if it arrives on my doorstep in a cardbord box, or is in a desparate, maybe life threatening situation. No adopting any from free ads, nor popping into P@H and completly falling in love." But, yesterday, my Brother's friend asked me, knowing I was hamster mad, if I wanted to come and see her hamster, obviously I couldn't say no

When I saw the cage the poor little 'Ginger' was in I almost cried out, it was an utterly repulsive 'Habitrail Playground' which Rachel was advised was 'perfect size' for hamsters. It's 9''high, 16''wide, 10''deep for goodness sake!! Some of Ginger's bedding in her sleeping conpartment was litrally MUD it was so badly soiled, and it was FLUFFY BEDDING! There was mouldy food in there too, which Ginger tried to eat, I mean - eating this could ecause Ginger to become very ill! On to the food, apparently they drive to a pet shop in Exeter (more than 30 mins drive away if you include waiting in the traffic to get into the center) to get Wag food for hamsters, gebils AND mice, when they can walk 5 mins down the road to the local big old fashioned 'everything' shop and pick up Harry hamster. Ginger had no wheel and Rachel says she doesn't often handle her because Ginger bites (which she does).

When I was there I prompted her to clean Ginger out (with my help) and told her all the things she was doing wrong (and her Mum agreed to go down to the local recycling site in search of a better cage, I have seen a few decent sized aquariams down there that I recomended to her) and next time I see Rachel I'll hand her some sheets for hamster care and stuff, but im wondering if that will help. I think it will, because she obviously loves Ginger (Ginger has quite a few toys in her cage), she's just doesn't like holding her, and has been mislead by pet shops and horrid cage manefactuars (sp? ) but she did ask me if I wanted to have Ginger. I was really tempted to say yes, but I also think that since Rachel does love animals (she's only 9 I think) I may give her a second chance to see if she can change her ways for the better and really learn how to care for Ginger (who is, by the way, a tiiiiiiny Cinnamon girl with a father bloated feeling tummy, and is a hamster as pointy in the face as there ever was! But she's sweet anyway) I don't know how to make Rachel regain her trust in Ginger, and, mainly, to ensure that Ginger will not bite Rachel hard again.

I have told my brother to check on how Ginger is bveing cared for next time he visits Rachel, and if I hear that she is not being cared for apropratly despite my advise, I will take up the offer of taking on Ginger, as I can't bear to know a hamster is suffering and not help it.

What do you think, am I doing the right thing giving Rachel a second chance? I don't hold her to blame too much, as she didn't know any better, although I am cross about that state Ginger's sleeping compartment was in.

Also if i make a bin cage and use playpen panels will they be ok? Or will the gaps be too large?
thanks

I have wanted to get a wodent wheel but after lots of resarch had to give up so I hope that he can manage this. Just thought that I would share this as I am very excited by this.

Been meaning to do this for a while so here's introducing Fatty and Lilly my syrians. I seem to have lost the pictures of my robos so they will have to wait. Fatty is the oldest and male. Lily is bigger though, about 200g last time I checked.

Ths first phots are of Lily, younger than fatty she was a screamer when we first got her. She only screamed for a few days but it took us longer for us to hold her. Now she likes to come out and has recently broke out of ball twice and eaten a huge hole in her cage. She was wheel mad when she was younger and now its just when she fancies. She loves shredding things. Out an about she has a go at dressing gowns and curtains. in tank she demolishes rope toys and they appear in her nest. The first Lily photo is when she's all grown up, the others are from when we first got her.

Fatty is the one most likey to come out and say hello just 'cause he can hear movement. He's very bold and loves free roam exploration. If he decides he wants out he does the desperate meercat - also when you out him back he mad dashes and stands by the door. He is a massive bar climber but when he gets bored he will just let go so there is a hammock in his cage to catch him! He is also a genious at finding holes i had no idea existed including under the carpet and i caught him lifting loose panels of wood in the fitted bathroom! The key signs i've discovered are very loud happy snuffling noises.

They seem to like each other and follow each other around. Fatty is at my aunts at the moment and i have noticed that Lilly has pretty much stopped talking and does a lot less ball running. Nevermind, fatty will be home soon

So 2 days after Lily learns to open her ball she goes bonkers on her cage. She's been developing a taste for the water bottle so I moved it and put sticks through the normal hole. She goes through 2 in about 15 minutes with breaks inbetween. I wake up this morning and shes chewed a hole the size of a pound in her cage.

So today i bought wooden blocks as a stopping measure, go to check on her this evening and guess what. The hole is now big enough for her whole head to fit through!! I think the only reason she wasn't out is cause there is no where for her to go(cage overhangs edge). And then she escaped from her ball tonight aswell (found her under a cupboard).

Do you think she's trying to tell me something?.......... Also does anyone have a repair idea? For those who are familiar with zoozones she chewed directly one one side of the water bottle hole including the curved bit!!!

This little man had a temporary name of 'Marlon' but tonight we agreed his proper name would be Poirot, a nod to our most beautiful yellow lady who passed away, Miss Lemon. He is a crazy man, very entertaining, but doesnt stay still for a moment! As you can see, his yellow does need to deepen quite a bit, which we hope will come with age, but he does have some nice dark ticking developing, so we hope he might develop into a good looking hamster!

I just want to smoosh and cuddle him, but at the moment he wont let me! There's always too much going on, and he wants to do all of it! As an example, I picked him up tonight and went to the food bin to get him out a peanut (in the hope it would keep him still for photos) and he jumped off me, right into the bin!

Hi everyone.

Well, we are nearing completion of the new website (well the foundation elements anyway) which will mean that the website will close down for a day in a couple of weeks while I move everything over (I will give prior notice).

Part of the migration includes a shiny new forum with lots of new features (and yes, new ways of doing things to get used to, sorry ) I have already run test migrations which appear to have worked fine with everything porting over. That said, if there is anything important to you such as photos you have uploaded to our website, private messages etc. that you want to ensure you have post migrate should the odd thing go astray, now is the time to save them to your computer ahead of the big move.

Also please make sure that your email address is correct in your profile settings. The one thing that will not port over is your log-in password. This is because the forum encripts it at the point you set it and cannot be read by any other type of forum. Once I port over to the new forum I will trigger an email to all members (remember to check your spam box as well if it doesn't appear when we are back online). The email will contain a link to reset your password automatically.

I will of course give instructions nearer the time, and if the email does not appear for you, you will be able to email me to manually reset it, although this will take longer than the automated email.

He's settled in very well~ He spent last night trashing his cage... it needed trashing. It was far too neat. (:

This is a little boy I collected on Sunday from nooboo. ^_^ I tried to take pictures yesterday, but he just would not keep still and kept mountaineering all over the sofa... So I figured tonight any photography would take place in his cage! I called him Oscar... Ozzy for short. And I've already started calling him my little prince of darkness, as in, Ozzy Osbourne. Ooopsie.

Look at those whiskerssss!

Okay, so I haven't thought to cheak Misty's (My lovely Sapphire WW for Bourne Valley) sex before, as I decided to trust the professionals, but, for some reason today I turned her upside down and what I saw shocked me... she has a penis??

Maybe it isn't, maybe I'm just stupid...the vents are a tinnny bit closer that the other boys I have, but maybe because Misty is young. S/he does have a scent gland, but it's so hard to see because she has so much flubber... I'm really confused as I have no other female to compere him/her to, just 4 boys, so what are your opinions, either way, I'm sure s/he has some sort of penis, having sexed WWs before, I just haven't seen a female's bits in ages (over a year). The vents are close (they appear extra close in the pics, they are not as close as they seem, s/he just, as I have already said, so maybe s/heis one of thoes he-shes that occasionally pop up on the hamter world. Or maybe Misty is just a she, or maybe a he... I don't know, I'm confused! I would think it's a he, just s/he has been sexed by experts... Oh I don't know!

Okay, the pics won't upload for some reason, so I'm posting this anyway (to make sure I don't accidently close the tab before I post it ) and I'll see if I can post the pics on this thread later
